DS 1.0
OVERVIEW

Having navigated the complexities of design systems at various companies I joined the project as a Principal Designer. Besides delivering new features, I quickly recognized the need for a consistent, reusable design approach. Initially, our ad-hoc design method worked well, but the expanding team and codebase necessitated a more systematic solution. While design systems can sometimes stifle creativity with a one-size-fits-all mentality, our redesign of network creation underscored the need for consistency and reusability in both code and visual style. This realization prompted me to lead the migration process to the new Design System.

About the project

BRIDGING THE GAP

I led a cross-functional team to develop the design system, balancing creativity with technical needs. We created comprehensive guidelines and defined clear patterns for the design team, which improved consistency and efficiency across all products.

DOING IT DIFFERENTLY

To avoid common pitfalls, we established guiding principles:

  • Aid to Creativity: Flexible enough to allow variation and innovation.

  • Code as Source of Truth: Ensuring designed components matched their coded counterparts.

  • Contribute Together: Reflecting the current team's needs and collaborative efforts.

OUTCOME

The Design System reduced design and development time by 30%, established a weekly review process to align designers and developers. This enhanced efficiency, consistency, and user satisfaction, while fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration within the design team.

CONCLUSION

The migration to the Design System was transformative, underscoring the importance of structured design processes and teamwork. It balanced creative freedom with the need for consistency, ensuring design excellence and operational efficiency.
